Hearing Aid Batteries

Hearing aid batteries are zinc-air batteries or lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.

Disposable hearing aid batteries are available in size 10, 312, 13 and 675. They are color-coded for easy identification: yellow (10), brown (312), orange (13) and blue (675). Li-ion rechargeable batteries are built into hearing aids, and require nightly charging.

Batteries

The majority of hearing aid batteries are now more environmentally friendly and Mercury-free!

Zinc-Air batteries have a tab because they are air-activated. The tab seals the air holes on the battery. Once the tab is removed, it takes at least 30 seconds to one minute before the hearing aid battery is activated/charged. Therefore, we recommend you remove the sticker from your battery, and let it sit outside of your hearing aid for a couple minutes before closing the battery compartment. If you don’t do this, your battery may not obtain the correct voltage and may not have standard battery life.

Remember… do not remove the battery tab before you want to use it. Reattaching the tab will not stop the battery life from draining once the tab has been removed.

To ensure the optimal performance of your hearing aid batteries, switch off your hearing aid when it is not in use. If the battery should get wet due to moisture, sweating or excessive ear wax, dry your hearing aid at night.

Zinc Air batteries are technically classified as non-hazardous waste. However it is recommended to recycle your hearing aid batteries. They may be dropped off at the clinic at any time, and we will recycle them for you.

What to do if a hearing aid battery is swallowed?

Hearing aid batteries, whether they are used or new, must be stored out of the reach of small children and pets to prevent them from swallowing a battery. If batteries are ingested, seek medical help immediately.
